How to Make Your Jewelry Sparkle Like New — Jewelry Cleaning Tips

Overtime the shine of your jewelry gets dimmed or the metal and gemstones get damaged. If you are not sure how to clean your jewelry at home, we are offering you some hints to help you maintain jewelry's beauty and shine for many years to come.

How to Clean Your Jewelry

Diamonds

If you are trying to keep your diamonds sparkling, keep in mind that diamonds are natural magnets for grease, so they’re not that easy to keep clean. A simple way to keep your diamond jewelry looking good is to soak it in a gentle de-greasing solution. You can make a water with a few drops of mild dish soap mixture, and dip it once or twice a week. After you remove you diamonds from the cleaning solution, try to use clean and as soft brush as possible to remove any remaining dirt. You can even use a new toothbrush for those places that are hard-to-reach like the back of the diamond, which usually collects the most dirt and oil.

Pearls

Unlike some other gemstones, pearls are softer and more vulnerable to acids and extreme humidity levels, so your cleaning needs to be very gentle. Pearls can lose their luster if they get too clean, but on the other side the oils on your skin improve their sheen. However, body oils don’t do much for the silk used to thread cultured pearls. So after wearing them, wipe the string with a soft cloth and wrap them in tissue inside a clean box.

If you’ve decided to clean your pearls anyway, use no more than one drop of mild detergent in a bowl of warm water. High quality pearls are best washed in salty water – because the ocean was their natural habitat after all. The most important thing is not skip to dry and polish them afterwards, preferably with chamois leather. Fake pearls can be shined with a dry cloth as you would clean any other synthetic surface.

Silver

Decided to use environmentally-friendly cleaner using the ingredients from your kitchen? A simple chemical reaction can do miracles for cleaning your silver. Use boiling water, baking soda, salt and aluminum foil to bring back the sparkling effect of your silver jewelry. What you should do is place your silver on top of an aluminum foil lined on a glass roasting pan with the dull side facing down. Next you should pour boiling water over the silver items until they are covered, and add two tablespoons of baking soda and salt to each of them. Stir well to let baking soda dissolve instead of leaving granules to scratch the metal. The reaction will cause disappearing and transferring of the tarnish to the foil, leaving your jewelry perfectly clean.

Gold

A mixture of warm water and detergent-free soap is the best solution for cleaning your gold jewelry. Gently, but thoroughly, brush the gold jewelry with a soft toothbrush. When you are done, make sure that you rinse the pieces under warm running water and dry them with a soft microfiber cloth to prevent forming of white water spot stains. This is especially important for etched or detailed jewelry, since the cleaning solution can stick in small crevices and harden.
